Eureka Springs is known for its progressive, liberal-leaning community, which contrasts with the predominantly conservative, Republican political landscape of Arkansas as a whole. This liberal identity is reflected in the town's support for LGBTQIA+ rights, environmental preservation, and artistic and cultural diversity. It has long attracted a mix of artists, free thinkers, and individuals who value inclusivity.
Historically, Eureka Springs has been a haven for those seeking an alternative to the mainstream, with a reputation for embracing outsiders and fostering a countercultural vibe. The town has also enacted progressive local ordinances, such as being one of the first cities in Arkansas to pass a non-discrimination ordinance protecting LGBTQIA+ residents, despite challenges from the state government.
This contrasts sharply with the broader political tendencies of the surrounding region, which tends to vote for more conservative candidates, particularly in state and national elections. This divergence between local and regional politics has earned Eureka Springs the "blue dot in a red sea" label, as it stands out in the mostly conservative backdrop of rural Arkansas.
But, this post is not political. That was just a short description of what it actually is like here. Arkansas is by no means divided. It's very red. This is why the "blue dot in a red sea" descriptor is so ideal. Because, well, that's just what we are.
This week, here in Eureka Springs, we're celebrating BLUE.
BREWS, a popular local business, has launched the next art installation and this one is all about "BLUE." This exhibit not only explores various interpretations of the color blue, which can evoke a wide range of emotions, ideas, and artistic expressions, it will also bring along the usual mixed mediums, creative genius moments and brilliant concepts of local (and in many cases up-and-coming) artists in our beautiful town.

Given the town's vibrant art community and creative spirit, the exhibit features paintings, sculptures, clay, mixed media, lighting, garment/fashion and even functional art (like the adorable blue armadillo bookends.)
BLUE is a reflection on the color's symbolism: tranquility, melancholy, depth, and vastness, which clearly resonates with the natural beauty of Eureka Springs and her connection to water, sky, and landscape.
As with many events in Eureka Springs, this exhibit will likely attract both locals and visitors who appreciate the town’s blend of artistic expression and cultural inclusivity. Stop by and experience BLUE before it blends into the skyline and fades away . . .
