Inner Peace

Cuddled up in the lush embrace of the Ozark Mountains, my hometown beckons with an allure as enchanting as its picturesque landscape.

Eureka Springs, Arkansas, extends a vibrant invitation to explorers, ALL EXPLORERS, promising a tapestry woven from history, natural splendor, and an unexpected harmony.

Within this vibrant tapestry, conservative Christians and progressive LGBTQIA+ individuals intertwine their stories, creating a kaleidoscope of acceptance and mutual understanding that ignites the soul.

Yet, apparently, to some, I am still known as an alphabet person because I identify as the "G" in LGBTQIA+.

L=Lesbian

G=Gay

B=Bisexual

T=Transgender

Q=Queer (sometimes questioning)

I=Intersexual

A=Asexual

+ = represents other sexual identities, including pansexual and Two-Spirit

This gorgeous place and its historical narrative are a tale of resilience and adaptation. Formerly a bustling health retreat in the late 19th century, the town faced adversity with the advent of automobiles. Our hilly, narrow ("not-so-straight") streets clashed with the burgeoning automotive culture, resulting in dwindling visitors and economic strife.

Nowadays, our adversity comes not just from evolutionary changes with industry, environment and economics, but also with people and their new human mindsets.

Nevertheless, amidst all of these trials, Eureka Springs has always seemed to find a way to uncover the inner strength in her natural beauty and within the diverse community that has thrived here for years.

Amidst the turbulent times, Eureka became a magnet for a diverse spectrum of individuals seeking refuge from societal norms. Artists, writers, and visionaries gravitated towards this town, enticed by our tranquil setting and countercultural ambiance.

Victorian mansions, once symbols of affluence, transformed into havens for unconventional living and creative exploration. This influx of innovation and creativity laid the foundation for Eureka Springs' distinct identity as a haven for the liberated, the black sheep and the avant-garde.

Sticks and stones

Alright, for those of you out there to which this applies, feel free to dub some of us as "alphabet people" if you wish. After all, as the old adage goes, "sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me."

Words matter - but for many, like me, being labeled an alphabet person is just "water off a duck's back!"

"Invulnerability comes from radical humility. If you truly have no defense in your energy, you can't be attacked."

Once human beings venture into the realms of hatred, it not only inflicts pain, it also claims lives. The time for human beings to get over hatred and fear and find inner peace is NOW.

We are all capable of this. Do so by taking small, incremental steps like this: stop labeling people as just because they are different from you. That's a good place to start.

My friend Matt recently created a post on his Facebook page about his ability to cultivate his own inner peace that I found eloquent and compelling. My thanks to Matt for allowing me to feature you and your post here. Matt's Facebook Video Post About Inner Peace

Matt is not the only one that knows how to cultivate his own inner peace. Many Eurekans continue to overcome hatred and fear and continue to evolve as a religious mecca AND and a diverse vacation haven for all walks of life. It is no wonder why so many loving, heartful, caring, kind humans gravitate to this postage-stamp sized town in America.

In ES, we live from the heart

Eureka Springs, Arkansas is a remarkable tale of unity amidst diversity, where conservative Christians and progressive LGBTQIA+ individuals converge, not in conflict, but in harmony.

Every weekend, these two contrasting groups (and many others) traverse the same winding streets, immerse themselves in shared cultural experiences, and find solace in the historic embrace of this mountainous haven. It's a living testament to the power of community, where common ground transcends political and cultural divides, igniting a sense of belonging that resonates deeply within the soul.

This extraordinary synergy is not merely happenstance; it's the essence of what makes Eureka Springs a captivating destination. It's a place where the principles of empathy, acceptance, respect and understanding are not just espoused but lived out every day.
