There’s an undeniable enchantment that sweeps over you when you first set foot in Eureka Springs, Arkansas; that hard-to-explain, magical tug on your soul, connecting you to this corner of the world. It’s a feeling that everyone (locals and visitors) all recognize but can’t quite put into words. It's a spark of something deeply emotional, joyful, and transformative.

What is this magic, this mystery, that makes Eureka Springs such an irresistible place to visit and a beloved place to call home? Could it be that the magic of this charming town is not just about its historic architecture or stunning natural landscapes, but something deeper, something almost intangible?

Eureka Springs is joy!

When I first stepped foot on the sacred soil of Eureka Springs in August 2017, I couldn’t explain the magnetic pull this town had on me. It wasn’t just the stunning landscapes or the unique history. It was the overwhelming sense of joy that seemed to permeate every street corner and every interaction. But what? What is it about this place?

The answer may lie in the work of Ingrid Fetell Lee, a designer and writer whose studies have unlocked the secret behind how the physical world around us can evoke deep, intangible joy. In her groundbreaking research, Lee reveals how certain aesthetic qualities in our surroundings can have a profound effect on our emotional state. These qualities may even be in the things that we might not even consciously notice.

This is why I love to go joy-spotting in Eureka Springs!

What is joy-spotting?

Joy-spotting is the practice of actively seeking out and appreciating moments of joy in the world around you, often by noticing the small, subtle details that evoke a sense of happiness, wonder, or delight. It’s about being present in the moment and finding beauty in the everyday, whether it's through vibrant colors, natural landscapes, acts of kindness, or playful experiences. Joy-spotting encourages mindfulness and helps shift our focus from the mundane to the extraordinary, cultivating a deeper connection with our surroundings and a more positive outlook on life.

And just like that, I it all came clear to me: Eureka Springs consistently sparks joy, and that’s why I fell in love with it; that's why I love Eureka and that's what inspired me to start this blog www.iloveureka.com

In her research, Lee found that joy is an intense, momentary experience that can only be fully appreciated when we are truly present in the moment. Unlike happiness, which is an emotion that is measured over time, joy is about feeling good in the here and now. It’s the giddy feeling you get when you encounter something surprising, something delightful, something that lifts you up and makes you want to dance.

Consider the drab environments we often inhabit: the gray offices, the sterile schools, the uninviting gyms, and the institutionalized hospitals. These spaces are devoid of the very elements that could spark joy. They may be functional, but they do little to stir our spirits.

Ew!

Now, compare that to the things that fill our lives with a universal sense of happiness: confetti, balloons, rainbows, flowers, colored lights, fireworks, treehouses, and polka dots. These delightful things cut across all lines of age, gender, and ethnicity, bringing joy to everyone who encounters them. "These are not just joyful for a few people," Lee writes. "They are joyful for nearly everyone. They're universally joyful."

Lee’s research delves deeper into the common themes and patterns that arise when we explore these sources of joy: pops of color, curvy shapes, symmetry, and a sense of abundance and multiplicity. These tangible attributes create a visual language that our minds instinctively respond to. Lee calls this the “aesthetics of joy” — a concept rooted in the Greek word aisthanomai, meaning “I feel,” “I sense,” or “I perceive.” It’s a deeply physical, visceral response that connects us to our surroundings and, in doing so, elevates our emotional experiences.

This is Eureka Springs, Arkansas.

Our town, nestled in the heart of the Ozarks, is a living, breathing example of the aesthetics of joy. Whether you’re strolling along our winding streets or gazing at the colorful Victorian architecture, Eureka Springs is overflowing with the kind of beauty and charm that sparks joy in the hearts of those who visit and call it home.

Lee has researched and explored how we can all cultivate more joy in our lives by embracing the aesthetics that are all around us. The beautiful people of Eureka Springs have been, for generations, shaping their environment to evoke exactly the kind of joy Lee describes. Through conscious design, they have transformed the town into a place that continuously sparks joy — a place that celebrates the ordinary and elevates it to something extraordinary.

This is the spirit of Eureka Springs. The locals are known for their warmth and friendliness, and their environment reflects this infectious joy.

But why is joy so important?

Lee makes a compelling case, explaining that while we often chase after happiness as if it’s the ultimate goal, it’s really moments of joy that matter most. Happiness, she says, is about how we feel over time, while joy is about how we feel right now. Joy is an emotional gift, and it can be found in the smallest of moments:

  • the way the sunrise hits the Crescent Hotel each morning

  • encountering a stranger’s smile

  • an artist's mural

  • a giggling child

  • a red cardinal in a snowy tree

These fleeting, intense bursts of joy remind us of our shared humanity, transcending the everyday stresses of life and offering us a brief respite from the grind of modern existence.

When I go for a joy-spotting walk around Eureka Springs, it challenges me to adjust my attitude toward joy and get intentional about spotting joy.

My Eureka Springs is a place that invites you to experience life more fully, to embrace the joy around you, and to actively seek it out. Whether it’s through the town’s carefully preserved architecture, its vibrant arts scene, or its thriving local businesses, Eureka Springs has cultivated an environment where joy isn’t just an occasional feeling, it’s a way of life.

Lee believes that this drive for joy is deeply rooted in our survival instinct. Joy is not some superficial luxury, but a vital part of our emotional and psychological health. The pursuit of joy is, in essence, the pursuit of life itself. Eureka Springs, with its emphasis on beauty, community, and celebration, offers a blueprint for how we can all create more joy in our lives and in the world around us.

So, rather than chasing after happiness, focus on embracing joy in all its forms. Eureka Springs, Arkansas, is living proof that joy can be designed, cultivated, and shared. Our town offers an abundance of beauty, creativity, and warmth. Without even realizing it, Eureka Springs constantly reminds us that joy isn’t just a fleeting emotion, but something we can experience, nurture, and share, right here, right now.

Each moment of joy, though small, adds up over time to something greater than the sum of its parts. Eureka Springs is a place where joy is woven into the very fabric of the community, and its magic lies in the fact that joy is always within reach. All we have to do is open our eyes and embrace it.❤️
