In 2017, Opal Agafia coined the term Ozark Mountain Soul to describe her unique style of music. Agafia embodies the sound of the Ozark Mountains: a little soul, a little roots, a little rock-and-roll, a little old-timey swing and lot of heart. Drawing from many genres, Opal blends the best elements of soul, blues, country, jazz, gospel, swing, and traditional mountain music into a sound that captures the past and boldy pushes ahead.
Ozark Mountain Soul, the festival's namesake genre, is a harmonious fusion that draws inspiration from the rolling hills and deep-rooted traditions of the Ozarks. It is a genre where the authenticity of Americana meets the raw emotion of soulful storytelling, resulting in a sound that is both timeless and contemporary. This genre is the spirit of the Ozarks, honoring the beauty of its landscapes and the resilience of its people.
Kristal Kuykendall published this about Opal in The West Plains Daily Quill. "Agafia began calling her sound “Ozark Mountain soul” not long after she first performed publicly in 2015 and someone asked her to describe it. The broad influence of genres evident in her music, combined with the life-in-a-small-mountain-town storytelling of Agafia’s lyrics, brought her to the new self-prescribed genre label, Agafia says."
This year, the Ozark Mountain Soul Festival will take place from April 4 - 8, 2024 and while the plan is to deliver a variety of genres, the main focus is going to be placed on Americana-Roots music. TIP: The highly anticipated "great North American eclipse" is also scheduled to happen during the festival on April 8, 2024. (eclipse information here.)
